MAKE TIME: 4–6 hours
Beginner projects will introduce you to the basics of bag making. You'll learn to sew heavy-duty fabric, punch holes in fabric and leather, set metal rivets, and sew your first zipper!
Confident Beginner projects involve managing more pieces of fabric and leather. They'll teach you to add interior and exterior pockets and install new types of hardware, like snaps.
Intermediate projects involve a more in-depth making process. They'll teach you to work with a wider variety of tools and hardware techniques, like setting extra-strength tubular rivets.
Advanced projects are for experienced stitchers ready to invest a significant amount of time and energy into becoming a bag maker. Complex construction and seriously professionals results.

Waxed canvas is the original water-resistant fabric. It's a densely-woven cotton fabric that
has been saturated with wax, giving it an extra layer of protection. Waxed canvas shows scuffs, marks
and creases that blend into a weathered patina with age.
Our leather is sourced locally at Oregon Leather, as well as from a tannery in
Pennsylvania, and hand-selected for its quality. Our hides are cut into straps with a
hydraulic press to ensure precision and consistency. NOTE: Our tan leather might feel stiff at
first, but it will soften and darken to a lovely caramel brown with use.
Hardware can take a bag from looking homemade to truly professional—and it's not hard to
do! With a few basic tools, you'll be able to set rivets, snaps, magnetic closures and more. All of
our hardware is real metal and strong enough to hold up to years of wear and tear.

New ZealandI love the packaging, very environmental and such a cool storage method. I'm partway through my first bag and I must say totally clear instructions to follow, no problemo! Bag is shaping up just how I pictured it in my mind - great purchase unfortunately for living here in New Zealand awfully expensive but totally worth it!
United StatesI made a group of Fremont bags and gave them away as gifts. Some of them also had matching zippered pouches or tote bags. Making this pattern multiple times was a great way for a beginner like me to practice sewing and gain skill.
United StatesI enjoyed making the Fremont from a kit. I used video instructions and they were helpful. I was impressed with how the bag turned out, as was my husband, and friends. It is now my favorite purse, and I have several dozen so that is saying a lot. It is a great size for carrying everything I might want to and it starts out light weight so doesn't get too heavy. Plan to make another one!

United StatesThere maker kit really makes this process easy and I would recommend it for you first bag. Once you've done it without having to prep your materials, it is easy to make it your own. Once I finished the first one, I immediately made another one for a friend.

This would have been a 5 star review, but my kit did not come with the 14" YKK brass zipper...I was bummed because I had to source it last minute so I could complete bag in time for the birthday surprise.

CAHave you ever made something and just put it out to admire. This bag is THAT great! Even bought bags are not this well crafted. The products are top notch. I bought the full kit as wanted a craft project that I would work on right away thought I need to work on how to punch holes at the finishing stage. Already thinking of making another bag.
USMy leather is stiff how can I make it softer? Everything else was fine Thanks
Hi! Your finished bag looks beautiful. And yes, our veg tanned leather is a little stiff to start out with, but don't worry it will soften right up the more you use it. Then tan color will also begin to dark to a pretty caramel brown. Stick with it! :) As time goes by, it'll get nice and soft and comfy.

USI bought The Fremont Bag kit from you and I just loved sewing it together. I watched the Craftsy class and it was so simple and easy with Ellie’s great instructions. I will be sewing this bag again. I ordered and received the grey and marigold bag waxed cotton combo. It came out great. I hadn’t seen a zipper in YEARS and it came out wonderfully. USI bought the Freemont gray and green waxed canvas kit. The having the fabric & leather pre-cut and pre-punched made a HUGE difference for making the bag the first time. I knew that I didn't have to second guess my measuring and cutting and could just focus on techniques and assembling. It arrived in a tube so that the waxed canvas didn't need to be folded, there were no creases to deal with. I love the size and fabrics! I made the bag a second time as a gift to my sister - it went very well and she is thrilled with the results. I used some very special fabric called bogolan that I bought in Senegal, Africa for the pocket and it is lovely!
