Frequently Asked Questions

DO I NEED PRIOR SEWING EXPERIENCE?

Yes. The Slabtown Backpack is an advanced-level project and requires a solid foundation of basic skills, along with some prior bag making experience. We will not be teaching folks how to sew in this workshop. If you’re an experienced stitcher and/or have made a couple other Klum House bags, you’ll do great!

CAN I BRING MY OWN SEWING MACHINE?

Yes, if you have a home sewing machine that you like to work on or are hoping to get to know, you are welcome to bring it along. Please let us know via email (support@klumhouse.com) in advance of the workshop so we know whether or not to set up one of our machines for you. 

CAN I BRING MY OWN FABRIC?

We prefer that all students use Klum House’s pre-cut waxed canvas and natural canvas lining for their bag projects. Your fabric (along with all your other materials) are included in the cost of the workshop! This helps ensure that everyone is on the same page, can move along at the same time, and will be guaranteed a successful make!

WILL WE HAVE A LUNCH BREAK?

Yes, we will break for 30-45 min for lunch. You are welcome to bring lunch with you and store it in our fridge. Otherwise, we’ll share some recommendations for where you can run out and grab lunch (or an afternoon coffee!) nearby.

WHERE SHOULD I PARK WHEN I ARRIVE?

There is plenty of free street parking around Klum House—although you'll have to look closely, because it's interspersed with some time-limited spots. There are 3 spots directly in front of Klum House, which can be used by students on a first-come basis and can be reserved for anyone with accessibility concerns. If you continue down Tillamook Street, past Kirby Ave, you'll find spots on the next block. Additionally, if you turn the corner onto Kirby Ave, there are more spots down there. Plan on arriving a few minutes early to find a spot.

IM TRAVELING TO PORTLAND, WHERE SHOULD I STAY?

We are so honored that you are traveling to Portland for this workshop! Portland is such a fun city to visit, with a thriving creative community. If you’re going to be in town for a few days, check out Klum House’s Portland Travel Guide, which includes recommendations on where to stay, places to visit, our favorite sewing and fabric shops, and more.

CAN I SHOP FOR ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES AFTER CLASS?

Yes, that’s one of the many cool things about taking a workshop here at Klum House. You are welcome to shop our collection in-person before you leave, including additional kits, fabric, tools, and supplies—for 15% off on the day of your workshop!

WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION + REBOOKING POLICY?

• We require at least 7 days notice prior to the start of your workshop to cancel for a full refund. 

• We require at least 48 hours notice prior to the start of your workshop to rebook for a later class. 

• Full payment for the workshop is due at the time of sign up in order to secure your spot. 

• No-shows forfeit the chance to be refunded or rebook. 

• If Klum House cancels a workshop that you registered for, you are entitled to either a cash refund or a rebook to a later workshop. 

• If you transfer your registration to another workshop, you are responsible for paying the difference.

WHAT COVID SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WILL BE TAKEN?

We will do everything we can to protect our students’ health and safety and will be actively responding to the ever-changing Covid situation. At this time, the plan is to require that students wear masks inside the studio, aside from when eating or drinking. Weather permitting, we will keep our large rollup door open to maximize air circulation. Ellie will remove her mask while speaking to the group, to make sure everyone is able to hear and understand her clearly. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding!
