About Waxed Canvas

Waxed canvas is a densely woven cotton fabric that has been saturated with wax, giving it an extra layer of protection against the elements. This heritage fabric was first conceived of by Scottish sailors in the 1800s and has been long-loved for its durability, natural water resistance, and rugged character. Waxed canvas shows scuffs, marks, and creases that blend into a beautiful weathered patina with age.

Our waxed canvas is sourced from Scotland and the U.S. After using many different waxed canvases over the years, we’ve hand selected these for their superior quality. This is the same waxed canvas included in our maker kits and is great for all kinds of bag making projects. To learn more, check out our Essential Guide to Waxed Canvas!

Bag Requirements

Making a Klum House bag? Here’s how much yardage you’ll need:

Portsmith Tote: ¾ yard (main body), ⅝ yard (base)

Woodland Dopp Kit: ½ yard (exterior)

Oberlin Tote: 1 yard (main body, base, interior pocket), ⅓ yard (exterior pockets)

Fremont Tote: ½ yard (main body), ⅓ yard (exterior + interior pockets)

Maywood Totepack: ⅝ yard (main body), ½ yard (exterior + interior pockets)

Slabtown Backpack: 3/4 yard (main body), ½ yard (accent)

Cutting + Shipping

Waxed canvas will be cut in one continuous piece whenever possible.

If you purchase more than one yard, your waxed canvas may be folded. Folding can result in crease marks that will blend into the fabric with use. The appearance of unwanted creases can also be lessened with a hair dryer. Click here to learn more about waxed canvas care.

If you do not want folds, please purchase your waxed canvas in its own separate order and include a note at checkout that says you do not want shipping combined with any other orders placed. (Otherwise we try to combine multiple orders from a single customer to minimize shipping costs!)

    Great weight!

After ordering from 5 or 6 different vendors, I think yours is the best weight for the totes and backpacks I sew and sell online. Great saturated colors too!

Loved the Klum House waxed canvas

My first time using waxed canvas and I loved the ease in sewing it on my DX2000 Juki. And the choice of colors is super. The mailing was fast and $15 per yard was cheaper than many sites. Will definitely order again. Thank you! SANDRA MILLETT

    I love this fabric!

I was a little nervous to use it but ended up loving it! I made 2 aprons one in gray and the other in moss. Very beautiful colors.

    Waxed Canvas

Awesome! Love this waxed canvas. It came rolled in a tube to keep as many creases and lines out of it as possible. Can't wait to make some bags! Thank you, Klum House!

    The best Waxed Canvas

I don't want to talk bad about any other company, however, Klum House waxed canvas is the best waxed canvas. It looks professional and it is so easy to work with! I have tried others and they are not the same.

The waxed canvas is fabulous! It came quickly and was rolled, not folded. Klum House customer service is wonderful. Their products are very high quality and instructions are easy to follow.

    Easy to work With

Having tried another waxed canvas supplier, this one was very different, much lighter weight and I have since learnt that paraffin wax is lighter than beeswax fabric. It worked excellent for the Poprtsmith. So much easier to work with! I've noticed that not all patina well. For example, the black. I made a full black tote and it literally just looks rumpled:( I tried using a heat gun to reset and nothing. Just rumpled looking fabric. The brushed brown looks more like waxed canvas when crumpled. I bought 8 colors.

    None like no other

I have ordered waxed canvas from other fabric suppliers before on line. Unfortunately I have to order materials on line because I live 100 miles from a fabric store. It is nice to see and feel the fabric before I buy it. The waxed canvas I have ordered from others is very different, the look and feel of the waxed canvas from Klum House reminds me of leather. I made the Woodland Dopp for my two brothers and they were surprised that I made it and they thought it was made from a soft leather and it was sturdy. I said nope it's waxed canvas. After wiping away a few tears my brothers said they would cherish this bag forever. Thank you for your wonderful products and attention to details. There will be more orders from me!

Aw, so happy to hear that your brothers loved their Woodland Dopp Kits! Thanks for sharing and for the kind words ️

    Love My Waxed Canvas

This waxed canvas was the perfect weight for the Noodlehead Buckthorn Tote Pack I made. It was easy to sew using my Bernina 770 and a clear foot, didn’t even need to use my Teflon foot.
