Our teaching patterns are designed to help you build lifelong skills as you make.
INCLUDES:
- Maywood Pendleton® Expansion PDF instructions
- Tips for Sewing Pendleton® wool video tutorial
These PDF instructions will teach you how to add a Pendleton® wool exterior pocket to the Maywood Totepack. Because wool is a bulky fabric with lots of movement, adding a Pendleton® wool pocket to your bag on a home sewing machine requires slight modifications to the original pattern and sequence of construction.
This expansion is designed to be used in tandem with the main Maywood Totepack pattern, which is sold separately. Helpful signposts will guide your making path, letting you know when it’s time to transition from one set of instructions to the other.
NOTE: Our Full Bag Maker Kits with Pendleton® Wool already include these expansion instructions, so no need to purchase separately if making from a kit.
Crystal-clear fully illustrated instructions with helpful tips from Ellie, the pattern designer.
- After purchasing a PDF pattern, you will receive an email with a link to download the digital file(s).
- You can also access all previously-purchased digital goods at any time by logging into your account on our website.
- NOTE: It may not be possible to download a PDF pattern directly to your tablet or mobile device without a download app. We suggest using Adobe Acrobat in combination with a file storage service like Dropbox to download files to mobiles devices.
- Bag Dimensions: 16.5" H x 10.5" W (bottom) / 15" W (top) x 5" D
- Heavy-duty, water-resistant waxed canvas exterior
- Fully-lined with natural army duck canvas
- Convertible leather strapping system
- Size-inclusive straps to fit a wider range of bodies
- 14" brass YKK zipper closure with leather zipper pull

This kit won't just help you make a badass, professional quality bag. It's also designed to teach you new skills that you can apply to all kinds of future bag making projects. By the time you finish, you'll be a tubular rivet boss!
By the end, you'll be a pro at techniques like:
- Tracing and cutting pattern pieces
- Sewing heavy waxed canvas on a home machine
- Attaching zippers and lining
- Creating adjustable straps
- Setting tubular rivets
- Constructing boxed corners
- Installing magnetic snap closures
- Attaching and reinforcing leather straps
While you can sew the Maywood on any standard machine, constructing the bag does require some specific tools:
- A tubular rivet peening tool and (non-rubber) mallet to set the tubular rivets into the leather straps. Set rivets on a hard surface like concrete or stone for best results.
- A magnetic snap rivet setter to attach the magnetic snap closure.
- A drive punch and mallet to punch clean holes in the fabrics. Use on a punching board.
We recommend getting all three in our discounted Essential Tools Bundle. And don't forget to download the complete supplies list so you have everything you need to start riveting The Maywood Totepack like a boss!

@wholalacrafts
"I was really intimidated by the look of this bag, but it was so quick and the instructions were excellent!"
@fabric_scraps
“I bought a kit as a Christmas present to myself and been wearing it everyday since I made it. Also has proven to be the perfect bag to travel with.”
@ sew.with.intention
"Watch me make the Maywood Totepack!"
😍 Maker Stories
"I love the Pendleton fabric. I was nervous to use a fabric with so much movement in it, but the interfacing helped tremendously. This is the most in-depth sewing project I’ve ever completed. It definitely pushed my machine to its limits (in a good way). I got comfortable changing the presser foot and needle along with making small adjustments and redoing certain sections to make it look just right. I am addicted to making Klum House bags. They make up quickly and have the right balance of a handmade and professional aesthetic."
"I’ve been dreaming of making this convertible backpack and tote for myself for a long time. I also have wanted to use some lovely Pendleton wool in a project at some point. I feel like this combination made such a lovely aesthetic which looks even better in the fall leaves from my backyard! There were some areas that I really struggled with the rivets but overall this was a really fun project to put together. I felt really proud at lining up the fabric for the front pocket and sewing a lined zipper. Zippers are usually a struggle for me. The inside pocket fits my laptop with room to spare so this will definitely be my new go to bag! 🍁"
“This bag has all the features that I look for in a travel bag. It's big enough to fit a laptop! I love all the metal and leather details. Even the leather is cut out and punched. It’s all thoughtfully done and just beautiful."
“You end up with a bag that looks so professional. It's sleek AND it’s strong enough to carry all my things. It was also very empowering to make this bag.”
TIPS FOR SEWING
Pendleton® Wool

FAQS
Questions about The Maywood? We've got you covered.
No industrial or heavy duty machine needed— create a professional-quality bag successfully on a wide range of regular home sewing machines.
We recommend using a 100 denim needle or a non-stick needle, and all-purpose thread to match the main, accent, and lining fabrics.
The Maywood Totepack has tubular rivets, which must be set with a tubular rivet peening tool and a (non-rubber!) mallet on a hard surface, such as a slab of stone, metal anvil, or concrete floor.
To set the magnetic snap rivet, you’ll need a Magnetic Snap Rivet Setter or a Dot Anvil (not as professional of a result, but will do in a pinch). Finally, to punch holes in fabric you’ll need a 3/32” drive punch, which is used with a mallet on a cutting board.
You can add these tools to your kit individually, or combined in The Maywood + Naito Essential Tools Bundle for a discounted price!

The making time for intermediate projects is estimated at 6-8 hours. Having said that, each maker has their own pace and process. We recommend adding the online class for extra support and to ensure a seamless (no pun intended 😉) making experience.
The Maywood is an intermediate level project. Intermediate projects involve a more in-depth making process. They'll teach you to work with a wider variety of tools and hardware techniques, like setting extra-strength tubular rivets.
Tubular rivets are much stronger than double-cap rivets. Since The Maywood is a backpack, the straps pull away from the bag at the attachment points, which makes double-cap rivets unreliable, since they can pop-apart when pulled with opposing force. On the other hand, tubular rivets are made to withstand this force, and will stay in place (especially when reinforced with leather on the backside of the fabric).
So, in a nutshell, The Maywood is designed to stand the test of time! Please don't substitute double-cap rivets for the tubular ones when making The Maywood. Also note: tubular rivets need to be set with a Tubular Rivet Peening Tool (and a non-rubber mallet).
