These high quality #5 YKK brass zippers are hands down our favorite zippers for bag making. They are strong, made of real metal, and slide open and closed so smoothly. They have a closed (non-separating) end and a large opening in the slider to accommodate a leather zipper pull.

Heavy duty zipper with heavy fabric

I did some experimenting with different kinds of zippers. The uploaded photo (with the red zipper) shows what happens when the zipper is too lightweight for the fabric. The fabric is stiff, but the zipper tape is thin and doesn't lie flat.

I highly recommend using sturdy Klumhouse zippers when working with heavy fabric, especially waxed canvas. Check out the other uploaded photo (with the white zipper). It's an appropriate weight for the fabric and lies flat.

Gift Sets

Fremont totes are sturdy, practical gifts. I like to tuck a matching miniature Fremont (or flat pouch) inside each tote I give away to make a set.

The 8-inch zippers are a perfect size for these matching minis. Scaling down the Fremont pattern to fit the 8-inch zipper was also a fun challenge.

Here's a picture of a crimson mini.
