How to Remove a Magnetic Snap Rivet

Both our Maywood Totepack and Naito Bucket Bag use a hardware closure called a magnetic snap rivet. It might look the same on one side as a regular magnetic snap, but you don't set a regular one with a mallet. You just push it through the fabric and use the washer. A magnetic snap rivet sets like a rivet.

Put the punching board underneath, then find the smallest or second-to-smallest hole in the rivet removal tool bed and line it up with the magnet. It will feel a little slippery and sloppy, so hold it in place, set the pin punch in the center of the cap with a lot of pressure, and hit it with the mallet until you punch through. Puncturing a hole in the cap releases the set rivet, and both sides just come apart. Sometimes the cap sticks, and that is what the pliers are for.

What Tools Do You Need to Remove a Magnetic Snap Rivet?

A rivet removal tool, a poly punching board and a mallet, plus a pair of pliers over there in case you need them. It's really important to have the punching board under your tool. Without one you can bend the pin punch.
