Our Materials
Waxed Canvas
A densely-woven cotton fabric that's saturated with wax, giving it protection against the elements. It shows scuffs and creases that blend into a weathered patina. *fabric colors vary in weight from 10-12oz
Leather
Sourced from USA tanneries, and hand-selected for quality. Our hides are cut into straps with a hydraulic press to ensure precision and consistency.
Hardware
Hardware takes a bag from looking homemade to professional—and it's not hard to do! Using basic tools, you can set rivets & more. All our hardware is real metal and built to last.

😍 Maker Stories
"I loved putting this together - but even more, I LOVE using it! Waxed canvas & canvas lining creates shape without bulk. Such fun hammering 🔨! The 42" strap works great, or get the extended strap at no extra cost.⚡️"
"Proof that you too can be a sleep deprived mom of a 5-month-old and still sew a high quality bespoke bag on a very basic home sewing machine in a single afternoon."
My bag is finished and I'm IN LOVE 😍! Wow wow wow! The online class was invaluable for the trickier parts. Ellie is an amazing instructor and so clear! This thoughtfully designed bag was an absolute joy to sew.
I LOVED making this bag! The instructions are super clear, and the online class is the perfect add-on for visual learners and people looking for extra tips and tricks. Super rewarding, and I can’t wait to carry it everywhere!
FAQS
Questions about the Naito? We've got you covered.
No! The Naito Bucket Bag can be made successfully on a wide range of regular home sewing machines. A walking foot attachment and/or Jean-a-ma-jig can help you power through bulky seams. You do not need an industrial sewing machine to make the Naito.
We recommend using a 100 denim needle (or non-stick needle if using waxed canvas) and all-purpose thread to match the main, accent, and lining fabrics.
The Naito Bucket Bag has tubular rivets, which must be set with a tubular rivet peening tool and a (non-rubber!) mallet on a hard surface, such as a slab of stone, metal anvil, or concrete floor. To set the magnetic snap rivet, you’ll need a magnetic snap setter. Finally, to make holes in fabric you’ll need a 3/32” drive punch, which is used with a mallet on a cutting board.
You can add these tools to your kit individually, or combined in The Naito Essential Tools Bundle for a discounted price!

The making time for intermediate projects is estimated at 5-7 hours. Having said that, each maker has their own pace and process. We recommend adding the online class for extra support and to ensure a seamless (no pun intended 😉) making experience.
The Naito is an intermediate-level project with an estimated make time of 5-7 hours. Intermediate projects involve a more in-depth making process. They'll teach you to work with a wider variety of tools and hardware techniques, like setting extra-strength tubular rivets.
Tubular rivets are much stronger than double-cap rivets. Since the Naito is a sling bag, the strap pulls away from the bag at the attachment point, which makes double-cap rivets unreliable, since they can pop apart when pulled with opposing force.
On the other hand, tubular rivets are made to withstand this force and will stay in place (especially when reinforced with leather on the backside of the fabric). So, in a nutshell, the Naito is designed to stand the test of time!
Please don't substitute double-cap rivets for the tubular ones when making the Naito. Also note: tubular rivets need to be set with a Tubular Rivet Peening Tool and a non-rubber mallet.

I haven’t had a chance to make it yet!
My Pendleton choice for the next Naito bag was good. Surprised by the soft hand so stabilizing it will be a real learning experience! The waxed canvas is great, and I know Ellie will help me through the make!

excellent A little pricey
Love this kit, so glad I ordered it. Will start making it in a couple of days. As always quality of the items is the best.
I bought the Naito in the Pendleton patterned waxed canvas but when the Pendleton wool Naito came out, I had to have one!!!! I love this bag. I spent time traveling and did not miss a backpack at all. The quality of the kit makes this a breeze to put together. The instructions and illustrations are perfection! I did by the pattern but sometimes having it all cut and ready to go is so wonderful!!! Also the Pendleton pattern cam together perfectly at the seam!!! Wow! I did put a little color on the border of the phone pocket on the interior so I could quickly locate my phone.
This bag is great!! Ellie, your videos are excellent. This is my most recent full maker kit. After I completed the Naito bucket bag, I immediately went on the complete the Fremont Tote kit I've had for awhile. Last year I sewed The Maywood with Pendleton and absolutely love it! I am making my granddaughter The Maywood as well. I feel I am ready to crack open my Slabtown kit and get stitching. I love using the leather and hardware in these bags.
I have not started this project yet and probably won’t for a bit. I can say this is my fourth kit and have never been disappointed. Quality materials and directions. The videos are a great bonus! I’ve collected most of the tools to do any project (I do wish I was getting the credit/points for those purchases as it has become a significant investment) I’m sure I will continue to be a loyal customer-everyone is so impressed that I made these bags-hard to believe they are not store bought!
Thanks for the kind words, Mallary! Hope you love your Naito :)
I love this bag - so much room and so many pockets. Even when it isn’t full of all of your essentials, it still looks great! This is a really fun make as well. Don’t let the circle bottom intimidate you - Ellie has a perfect way to sew this together! I will be making more. Oh, did I say that the illustrations and instructions are absolutely perfect!
This was my third Klum House kit, and I loved it. I sewed along with the video, and it truly could not be easier. The video was extremely important for me as my first two sews were with Ellie at the last two Sew Expos; one in person and one virtual. It is also how I learn - visually.
I consider myself still a beginner, and I had no problems. I did my initial order though without the suggested tools. Well, I ended up needing to stop mid-sew, ordered the tools and was able to finish up the next weekend. Order the tools folks!
And, I absolutely love this bag. Truly love it. It will be my everyday bag for a long time.
Thank you for the wonderful pattern and kit.
Thanks, Sheryl! So glad you found the online class videos helpful. It's the best we can do without being in person :) And sorry you had to wait to get the right tools but glad it all worked out in the end. Thank you for sharing! <3
