This project won't just help you make a badass, professional quality bag. It's also designed to teach you new skills that you can apply to all kinds of future bag making projects. By the time you finish, you'll be a tubular rivet boss!
By the end, you'll be a pro at techniques like:
- Sewing heavy waxed canvas on a home machine
- Sewing a structured, three-dimensional cylinder
- Align and attach a circular base
- Setting tubular rivets
- Installing magnetic snap closures
- Attaching and reinforcing leather straps
While you can sew the Naito on any standard machine, constructing the bag does require some specific tools:
- A tubular rivet peening tool and non-rubber mallet to set the tubular rivets into the leather straps. Set rivets on a hard surface like concrete or stone for best results.
- A magnetic snap rivet setter to attach the magnetic snap closure.
- A drive punch and mallet to punch clean holes in the fabrics. Use on a punching board.
We recommend getting all three in our discounted Essential Tools Bundle. And don't forget to download the complete supplies list so you have everything you need to start riveting The Naito Bucket Bag like a boss!

Size-Inclusive Straps
The Naito pattern and kits have the option to add an extended crossbody strap for free to be inclusive of a wider range of body sizes! We believe no one should have to wear a bag with uncomfortable straps, or forego a fun project because the finished product isn’t functional on their body.

"Attaching the circle base on other bucket bag patterns was always unpleasant, but this one aligned perfectly, and Ellie’s class showed how to guide it through your machine."

😍 Maker Stories

My bag is finished and I am IN LOVE 😍! Wow wow wow! Having the kit was incredibly helpful, as all the bits and pieces were included, as well as very high-quality fabric. There was clearly a lot of thought put into the construction of this bag. The online class was invaluable when it came to the trickier parts. Ellie is an amazing instructor and breaks things down so clearly! Because of the clear instructions paired with the online class, this bag was an absolute joy to sew.

"The kits truly are a luxury. You are spoiled by beautiful fabric and then supplied with premium hardware and leather."

"Proof that you too can be a sleep deprived mom of a 5-month-old and still sew a high quality bespoke bag on a very basic home sewing machine in a single afternoon."

"I loved putting this together - but even more, I LOVE using it! Waxed canvas & canvas lining creates shape without bulk. Such fun hammering 🔨! The 42" strap works great, or get the extended strap at no extra cost.⚡️"

“I bought a kit as a Christmas present to myself and been wearing it everyday since I made it. Also has proven to be the perfect bag to travel with.”

I LOVED making this bag! The instructions are super clear, and the online class is the perfect add-on for visual learners and people looking for extra tips and tricks. Super rewarding, and I can’t wait to carry it everywhere!

FAQS
Questions about the Naito? We've got you covered.
No! The Naito Bucket Bag can be made successfully on a wide range of regular home sewing machines. A walking foot attachment and/or Jean-a-ma-jig can help you power through bulky seams. You do not need an industrial sewing machine to make the Naito.
We recommend using a 100 denim needle (or non-stick needle if using waxed canvas) and all-purpose thread to match the main, accent, and lining fabrics.
The Naito Bucket Bag has tubular rivets, which must be set with a tubular rivet peening tool and a (non-rubber!) mallet on a hard surface, such as a slab of stone, metal anvil, or concrete floor. To set the magnetic snap rivet, you’ll need a magnetic snap setter. Finally, to make holes in fabric you’ll need a 3/32” drive punch, which is used with a mallet on a cutting board.
You can add these tools to your kit individually, or combined in The Naito Essential Tools Bundle for a discounted price!

The making time for intermediate projects is estimated at 5-7 hours. Having said that, each maker has their own pace and process. We recommend adding the online class for extra support and to ensure a seamless (no pun intended 😉) making experience.
The Naito is an intermediate-level project with an estimated make time of 5-7 hours. Intermediate projects involve a more in-depth making process. They'll teach you to work with a wider variety of tools and hardware techniques, like setting extra-strength tubular rivets.
Tubular rivets are much stronger than double-cap rivets. Since the Naito is a sling bag, the strap pulls away from the bag at the attachment point, which makes double-cap rivets unreliable, since they can pop apart when pulled with opposing force.
On the other hand, tubular rivets are made to withstand this force and will stay in place (especially when reinforced with leather on the backside of the fabric). So, in a nutshell, the Naito is designed to stand the test of time!
Please don't substitute double-cap rivets for the tubular ones when making the Naito. Also note: tubular rivets need to be set with a Tubular Rivet Peening Tool and a non-rubber mallet.
I haven’t had a chance to make it yet!
My Pendleton choice for the next Naito bag was good. Surprised by the soft hand so stabilizing it will be a real learning experience! The waxed canvas is great, and I know Ellie will help me through the make!
